How to open a PDF on your phone without an app

Someone sent a PDF in a messenger or by email, and your phone suggests downloading an app. You do not have to install anything: the phone already has what it needs to open a PDF.

On an iPhone

An iPhone opens PDFs by itself: tap the file in Safari, Mail or the Files app and it opens in Quick Look. From a messenger, first save the file to Files with Share.

On Android

On many Android phones a PDF opens in Google Drive or the maker’s own app. If the phone asks what to open it with and there is no suitable app, save the file to Downloads and open it in the browser as shown below.

In your phone’s browser

  1. Open the PDF viewer page in your browser.
  2. Tap Choose file and find the PDF in Files or Downloads.
  3. Turn pages with the buttons at the bottom, search the text and fit the page to the screen width.

The file is read right in the browser and not uploaded — which matters for contracts, statements and medical letters. From the menu you can download the original or print the document.

If the PDF still won’t open

  • A password-protected PDF. OsonKit tells you the file is encrypted; ask the sender to remove the password.
  • A scan without a text layer. The pages open, but you cannot search the text — they are pictures.
  • A very large file. OsonKit opens PDFs up to 50 MB and 2,000 pages.
