How to open an old .doc or .ppt without Microsoft Office
Old `.doc` and `.ppt` files still arrive by email and sit in archives. You do not need Office for them: there are free ways, and they differ in what you will see and where the file goes.
What these files are
.doc and .ppt are the Word and PowerPoint 97–2003 formats. Since 2007 Office saves .docx and .pptx, but the old files have not gone away: contracts, manuals, archived presentations. Inside they are a binary format that not every program understands.
1. LibreOffice
A free office suite for Windows, Mac and Linux. It opens .doc and .ppt with layout, pictures and fonts and can edit them — offline, with no upload. The one catch: it has to be installed, which a work computer often does not allow.
2. Cloud office suites
Google Docs and Slides, as well as Word and PowerPoint in the browser, open the old formats, usually by converting them to the new ones. You need a Google or Microsoft account, and the file is uploaded to their drive, where it stays until you delete it.
3. Text view in OsonKit
If you just need to read it, drop the file on OsonKit: .doc or .ppt. Your browser reads the file itself — nothing to install, no account, no upload. It works on a phone too.
.doc— paragraphs, tables, alignment and page breaks. No fonts, pictures, headers, footers or footnotes: pictures are marked with a placeholder..ppt— the title and text of every slide and the speaker notes, with search. No pictures or layout. Slide shows (.pps) and templates (.pot) open too.- Files up to 50 MB, presentations up to 1000 slides. Password-protected files and Word 95 or older do not open.
Need the full layout?
Save the file in the new format — .docx or .pptx — with File → Save As in LibreOffice, or ask the sender to do it in Word or PowerPoint. OsonKit shows the new files in full: Word documents with pictures and charts, presentations with every slide.
.xlsx or open it in LibreOffice.
